Shire
Horses
Brickfields is the home of the Isle of Wight Shire Horse Centre. We have over a dozen shires and we breed two or three each year.
There is one of our residents who has quite a claim to fame, Shelley, otherwise known as Madame Butterfly, is owned by Joanna Lumley.
When the weather is not to dreadful, the horses come in to the yard in the day time, and then go out in the fields at night.
The horses take it in turns to do the difficult jobs around the centre, although none of them work too hard. One of their main tasks is to stand in front of visitors looking smart!
The best discription of the shires has got to be “the gentle giants”, they are fantastic horses to work with, as anyone that has spent any time with them will appreciate.
Brickfields is very proud of one particular gentle giant, Harry. He was born at the centre in 2003 and has kept growing at an amazing rate, he towers over all the other shires and is still growing. He should reach a record breaking height when he eventually stops growing. Shires sometimes keep growing up until they are seven years old – so watch this space!
We hope you will enjoy meeting them if you come to visit us at Brickfields.
